What do you need to do to become a tire technician?



There are several automobiles in the US and other parts of the world. Tire is the one thing which is common in all the automobiles. Because of this tire business is a big thing in this world. You need to know how to prepare if you are planning to work in this field of work.

The job of the tire technician involve repairing, balancing, installing and rotating tires.  They inspect tires for wear, patch some tires and make sure they are properly inflated.

Some tires also need special treatment. Some tires are also studded in order to get special traction for the winter road conditions. Technicians also need to retread the previously worn tires.

Tire technicians may maintain tire repair equipment, take inventory and also sell tires.

You need to have a high school diploma or equivalent in order to be a tire technician. Employers are always in search of the best candidates.

Some experience in the tire business is also required. Other will give you on the job training until you become proficient enough to run the business for yourself.

It is also necessary for the tire technician to have good customer service skills. Nothing should be more important to you than the customer. You always need to meet all their requirements. Proper communication is needed to meet your customer's requirements.

Mechanical aptitude is a plus, as you will be working with mechanical things.  You will also need to operate tire balances and tire changing machines. Computer support is a main part of every business now. Computers are used for inventory, payroll, and billing. Basic computer skills is also a main requirement.

You will need to be able to work with minimal supervision.  Tire business is an extremely busy one. You are a member of a team and you must be able to apply your skills while others are busy doing other things.


Tire technicians also need to do heavy lifting. If you want this as your vocation, you should be able to do that lifting when required.  You need to be able to do it safely as well.

You will most likely need a driver's license and you may be required to deliver parts and tires to other locations. You will want to have a clean driving record.

You can work up to about $16 per hour in the tire business.  You can also start working on your own business. You will need to meet the requirements as stated above as well as good customer skills.  You should be able to help the customers in all possible ways. With a little education you can perform well in this business.
